Need a Barn Demolition?

Why our Barn Demolitions are Special

At Barnwood Addicts we aim to preserve and restore the unique history in each piece of wood. In order to do so, the barns must be carefully dismantled to ensure that as much of it can be salvaged as possible. However, this isn’t cheap or easy and requires skilled laborers.

The Process

Each barn is different, so steps may vary, but generally we begin with a crew of 4 to 5 people.

Before the dismantling begins, we first ensure that the barn is cleared out on the inside. Usually this is the clients responsibility, but arrangements can be made for us to clean it out beforehand. We  begin by clearing the wood from the inside. If the barn has a second floor we first take out the floorboards and remove the joists, as well as any non-supporting beams and inside walls. From there the ground floor is dismantled and any non-supporting beams and inside walls are removed, along with the floor, if possible at the time.

From there, we move to the outside of the barn and strip everything we can. All of the outside boards, doors, and windows up to the floor of the second floor are completely taken off. Anything higher than the first floor is left,  for the safety of our crew.

At this point the barn has been skinned, is weak, and it is ready to come down. We will cut notches in various supporting beams to help aid in the takedown. To pull the barn down we attach the cable from the winch on our truck to one side and  we attach a chain or two to the skid steer and the other side of the barn. Sometimes this results in a smooth takedown, other times some barns come down one beam at a time.

Once the barn is on the ground we begin taking apart the roof and pulling out the larger, supportive beams. Throughout the barn demo we constantly sort through and stack the wood, taking what we can use and separating what we can’t. This remaining wood we can’t use is left to the owner’s discretion. Although, we can include leveling off and cleanup of the ground for an extra fee.

The Work Doesn’t End There!

Once the wood arrives in our shop we begin to prep the wood for later use. This consists of removing all nails and other metal pieces, trimming off the bad ends, and storing the wood for when it is needed. This is a lengthy process that often takes a couple of days.

From there, boards or beams are pulled as needed and moved inside to begin drying. They continue drying until they reach a moisture content of 12% or lower, anything higher than that can cause warping of the product or incomplete drying of the poly.

We strive to ensure that each board is the perfect one for your project. Nothing leaves the shop unless Scott is happy with it.
